A simple way to gather, protect and display the mementos of your relationship in a case that grows with every anniversary.

Most couples have a drawer somewhere full of ticket stubs, cards and dried flowers. A memory case gives those things a home and turns each anniversary into a small ritual: you add something, you look back, you look ahead. Here is how to start one.

What you need

  • A shadow box or deep frame with a removable back
  • Acid-free backing board and tissue
  • Pins, photo corners or a needle and thread
  • Small labels and a fine pen
  • The mementos you already have

Step 1: Gather everything

Empty the drawer, the shoebox and the corner of the wallet. Lay it all out on a table. You will be surprised how much you have kept without meaning to.

Step 2: Choose a story

A case works best with a thread running through it. It could be your first year, a trip, your wedding day or one item from each year so far. Pick the pieces that tell that story and set the rest aside for later.

Step 3: Plan the layout

Arrange the items on the backing board before fixing anything. Put the largest piece slightly off center. Group small things together. Leave space for future years if you plan to keep adding.

Step 4: Fix gently

Avoid glue on anything original. Use photo corners for flat paper, a few stitches for fabric and fine pins for heavier pieces. Wrap fragile flowers in a little acid-free tissue before placing them.

Step 5: Label it

Add a short label to each piece: a date and a few words. In twenty years you will be glad you wrote down which concert that ticket was from.

Step 6: Choose the spot

Hang or stand the case somewhere you pass every day, away from direct sun and damp. A hallway or bedroom wall works well. Our guide to displaying keepsakes without damage covers the details.

Step 7: Make it a ritual

On each anniversary, open the case together and add one thing from the year. Talk about why you chose it. When the case fills up, start a second one, or move older items into a lidded memory chest.

Ideas for what to add

  • A ticket or program from something you did together
  • A key from a first home
  • A handwritten note or card
  • A small item that matches that year’s traditional theme
